Freemium

Coined by Jarid Lukin in March 2006, this adage describes a business model where valuable content or services are provided for free for some period of time (often, forever) in order to build a list of passionate users. ScreenToaster did just this and built a list of devoted online video creators (like me). They were snapped up by a Silicon Valley firm just 8 months after their initial launch.
